The Japan Football Association says former Juventus and AC Milan coach Alberto Zaccheroni is the new coach of Japan’s national team. The association made the announcement on Monday.

Zaccheroni is to succeed Takeshi Okada who led Japan to the knockout round in the World Cup in South Africa.

Zaccheroni is a 57-year-old Italian who has managed a number of top clubs in Italy’s Serie A. His managerial career began at age 30 with Udinese, when the club was in a lower division. He adopted an aggressive 3-4-3 tactical system and guided Udinese to third place in Serie A in 1998. In 1999, he led AC Milan to win the league title.

Later, Zaccheroni managed Lazio, Internazionale and Torino. Early this year, he was appointed manager of Juventus, but his 4-month contract ended after the club finished 7th in the league.
