Work Begins On World’s Largest Solar Power Plant

Solar Plant

The ground-breaking ceremony for what will be the world’s largest solar power plant was held in Thailand on Sunday. Solar power is drawing attention as a clean energy that helps the fight against global warming.

A Thai power company is building the plant in Lop Buri Province in central Thailand. It will use about 570,000 solar panels. When completed, it will produce 73 megawatts of electricity, making it one of the world’s largest in terms of capacity. It’s scheduled to supply power to about 70,000 households in the surrounding district.

About 300 people attended the ground-breaking ceremony on Sunday, including employees of Japanese trading firm Mitsubishi and leading Japanese electronics maker Sharp. Both companies are involved in the construction of the power plant.

The Thai government aims to increase the use of solar, wind and other renewable energy from a little more than 6 percent of the total energy consumed in the country to about 20 percent by 2022.

Especially for solar power, a preferential measure has been introduced for the government to purchase electricity at about triple the usual price.

An official of the Thai power company building the plant said it hopes the project becomes a global model for environment-friendly measures. The solar power plant is scheduled to start commercial operation by the end of 2011.
