Only in a world of instant social media gratification, photo sharing, Facebook and Twitter can a new Internet trend like planking become the next best thing since sliced bread. Planking pictures have taken off like wild fire across the social tubes and Facebook seems to be fanning the flames more than any site.
There is even an official Planking page on Facebook giving you the rules of planking, the way to share your planking photos and most important of all, a way to look at all the other crazy plankers around the world.

Some say this Internet activity sensation started in New Zealand but it’s suspected this trend was actually semi-started in 1995 by what is called, “The lying down game.” It’s possible that it was started from a 1995 Radiohead song which in the video production a man laid down in the road in the beginning of the song and by the end everyone was laying down in the road. Planking however has nothing to do with lying down in the road.

Here is how planking works:

What is planking? According to the official Facebook Planking page, “You got a body, you got a Plank.” The are some rules however and you have to follow them. Planking involves the planker (errr pranker) to lay face down and placing their body either on the ground or in some type of in the air position with the body as stiff as possible like a plank on a pirate’s ship. Your hands are supposed to be palms inward to your side and the more creative you get with your planking the better you have done.

Don’t worry you won’t be the only stiff board of a human planking around, there are crazy celebrities doing it as well. People like Ellen Page is planking, The Today Show is planking and Justin Bieber is planking too. So what are you waiting for? Get to freaking planking you plankster.

There is a catch, firings and pink slips across the country are now being handed out to people planking on the job. The latest casualty was 6 miners in Australia that got canned for planking. Be careful where you plank, how you plank and who sees you plank. If the wrong observer catches your plankin’ the wrong way, argggh matteey, you might be walking the plank yourself into a jobless future.
