In an election held in Oklahoma on Tuesday the Oklahoma State Election Board received 695,568 votes on yes and 296,903 no votes. The yes votes were 70 percent of the vote and 29.92 percent were the no votes. The vote was to ammend the state Consitution. Article 7, Section 1 would be ammended to force the courts to only use federal law and state laws when making decisions on cases. This would exclude international laws and sharia law or as some call it, Islamic law.
The discussion of international law was to include “the conduct of international organizations and independent nations, such as countries, states and tribes. It deals with their relationships with each other. It also deals with some of their relationships with persons. The law of nations is formed by the general assent of civilized nations. Sources of international law also include international agreements, as well as treaties.”
Muneer Awad was the person who filed the injunction against the Oklahoma Election Bard. He filed a 27 page report for a temporary restraing order and injunction from certifying any election results from the infamous question #755. Awad told press officials about his actions at 2pm at the state Capitol building. Standing with Mr. Awad was the Islamic Society of Greater Oklahoma City, Central Oklahoma Human Rights Association and the ACLU of Oklahoma.
”We have a handful of politicians who have pushed an amendment through our state ballot, which has been conducted in a well planned and well funded campaign based on misinformation and fear with respect to the Muslim community,” he said. Awad said that question #755 takes away unalienable rights of a minority community in Oklahoma. The estimated population of Muslims in Oklahoma is expected to be 20,000-30,000.
“When we heard about this proposed amendment, I realized that I, as a Muslim, was being told that I don’t have the same rights as a Christian, or a Jew or any other person of any other faith,” he said.
The amendment would affect his ability to marry in accordance with his faith, to give to charity, to will his property, to enter into a business contract, Awad said. This is why CAIR felt compelled to speak out as a community, as Oklahomans, as a civil rights advocate, he said.
The co-author of question number 755 is State Representative, Lewis Moore, Republican. Mr. Moore expected there would be challenges to face in court if the law passed. He said, “Islam and Christianity are in a cultural war and more importantly a religious war.” “That is not going away,” Moore said. “They want total domination.”
Blair also pointed out that the FBI severed ties with the organization because it was named an unindicted co-conspirator in United States v. Holy Land Foundation, and CAIR had failed to answer the FBI’s questions about a connection between their executives and Hamas.
ACT! for America issued a press release stating that CAIR’s action ignores the will of Oklahomans who voted for the proposition.
“This amendment, which is supported overwhelmingly by the people of Oklahoma, protects non-Muslims and Muslims alike from the tyranny and discrimination of sharia law,” said Brigitte Gabriel, president of ACT! for America. “It is absolutely absurd for CAIR-Oklahoma to say it’s filing a lawsuit simply because the law is ‘discriminatory.’”
