Charlie Chaplin Time Traveler’s Cell Phone is a Siemens 1924 Hearing Aid

Siemens Hearing Aid Technology Charlie Chaplin

We recently covered a story about a man named George Clarke whom is a professional movie producer and revealed a time traveler in Charlie Chaplin’s, “The Circus.” Mr. Clarke was very convincing and provided a video of a woman (or man) walking down the street in Hollywood talking on what appeared to be a mobile phone. We were lucky enough to receive a comment from a user named Patrick that seems to have made some sense of all this time traveler talk. Here is our Charlie Chaplin cell phone explanation.

So after looking at the Siemens Hearing Aid website we think it’s some pretty solid evidence that the Charlie Chaplin Time Traveler Cell Phone is just that, a hearing aid. It seems that the technology seen in the 1928 video was in it’s prime at the time after being patented in 1924 by Siemens.

On the Siemens website they list different hearing aid technologies that clearly could have been the culprit for the Charlie Chaplin Time Traveler phone. With tons of people thinking the Chaplin Cellphone was faked somehow, it probably isn’t fake. So it wasn’t a hoax, it was just simply a wealthy Hollywoodian using one of these new devices to help themselves hear and talk.

On the Siemens website they say they filed for a patent in 1924 for the patent of the device you see in the picture above with the older man and younger woman smiling. They call it a compact, pocket sized carbon microphone / amplifier device suitable for pocket instruments.

On the Siemens website they explain the technology of the 1924 hearing aid technology as this:

For a while, the carbon amplifier patented by Siemens played a major role in hearing aid technology and significantly raised the volume of hearing aids.

The electrical energy controlled by the carbon microphone was not fed to the receiver directly. It first drove the diaphragm of an electromagnetic system connected to a carbon-granule chamber. Current was transmitted across this chamber from the vibrating diaphragm electrode to the fixed electrode plate.

The amplified current produced mechanical vibrations in the electromagnetic hearing diaphragm that were then transmitted to the ear as sound.

The other picture of an older woman sitting with a white jacket and a hat on also looks similar to the Chaplin Time Traveler. This hearing aid technology was created in 1910. You can see that the woman with this hearing aid clearly looks like she’s talking on a telephone as well. With a few advances and the wire not being in sight you can see the jump to the woman walking down the street with a cellphone in her hand.

Siemens describes this 1910 technology about this hearing device on their website as:

When electrical energy began to be used in communications, hearing aids started carrying carbon microphones, which are still being used successfully in telephone systems today.

Although their transmission quality was still unsatisfactory, these hearing aids achieved a greater acoustic gain than either ear trumpets or ear tubes.

Their volume could be regulated by supplying more or less current to the microphone.

While it was a fun ride to imagine that some old film of Charlie Chaplin’s like The Circus gave us some out of this world proof of time travel, it really just gave us an antique tour down hearing aid memory lane. • Roger Reed says:

While I do not believe it to be a Mobile phone, I also do not think that it’s an hearing aid. Firstly, who would she be talking to? Secondly, there has to be aa cable connected to a large battery pack as smaller batteries did not exist back then. Also your photographs show large packs connected to the hearing device and non of this is apparent in the film clip. I think that the Jury is still out on this one.
